I get a screen similar to the one below:

It just stays like that and nothing happens! How do I connect to the IRC properly?

Some routers don't seem to like the ports IRC uses to connect. To get around this, the admins at SwiftIRC have setup 1 server to use a common port to connect with that should work. 

In the IRC interface, click the "New server window" button and type this:

/server darklite.be.eu.SwiftIRC.net:8080

You can setup to connect to this server by default by looking at this article. Don't forget to change the Server hostname to darklite.be.eu.SwiftIRC.net and the Server port to 8080.
